After two torrential tries, the Steve Keegan Memorial finally took place in glorious golfing weather at Castletown GC on Saturday. Steve would have been delighted that 106 members participated in the purest form of golf, a stroke-play competition, which was his favoured format. Michael Charmer, who opened this season by winning the pairs Texas Scramble with Tom Doherty in early March, bagged another bookend by securing the trophy that commemorates his former four-ball friend. Charmer’s fine five under par performance included six birdies and just one bogey, for a superb 67.

This bogey competition was won by Nicky Vincent from Douglas CG. Her plucky (-1) score was four strokes clear of the field. Playing off a handicap of (15), Vincent parred a third of the holes for plusses and nett parred almost another third. Unfortunately, two of her seven bogeys fell on non-shot holes. Four double bogeys and Vincent’s opening triple bogey completed a creditable card for 91/76.

All the summer knockout competitions are now complete and Michael Saabye Katkjaer almost made it a clean sweep. He had won the W. Kirkpatrick Men’s Singles Trophy defeating Ernie Russell, one up, in the closely contested final. Then, ably assisted by Tami James, Katkjaer lifted the Sissons Mixed Pairs Matchplay Trophy after an epic encounter in the final, winning (2&1) against Aaron Hawley and Sarah Wignall.

Winter League specialist Frankie Doherty (10) demonstrated his resilience, romping round to post nett 64 and win by three clear strokes. Doherty’s tremendous two over par performances included a birdie on the 4th, then three bogeys, before an uninterrupted procession of pars.

Sunday 14th September 2025
With the 14th and 15th temporarily closed for irrigation installation work, this 16-hole competition was won with a regulation 32 Stableford points. Both Tim Shallcross (16) and Robert Quine (16) shared the same score. The fast-finishing winner, Shallcross, suffered his two N/Rs on the front-nine, whereas Quine had one on each leg and also double bogeyed the 10th. However, Quine did have the consolation of collecting the nearest-the-pin (NTP) prize on the 16th.
