CARTWRIGHT AND CO. STACK-UP POINTS TO WIN PYRAMID STABLEFORD

It was a pleasure to play with just a two-club wind at Castletown Golf Links on Saturday. The fairways were in fine fettle, and the greens were running true but slightly slower than standard. Such a shame that the loop from the 7th to the 9th is still out of commission. Consequently, the Pyramid Stableford was set over 15 holes with one score needed for the first third, two on the next, and three to be carded on each of the final five holes.

Winning by a healthy margin of three points, Neil Cartwright, Terry Ditchfield, Alan Rowe and John Ledwidge only fell below par on one hole, the 17th. Having bagged birdies on six holes and nett birdies on four more, they stacked up 67 winning Stableford points, seven better than par. Ditchfield and Rowe shared the most valuable player accolade, both contributing 20 points apiece.

Tim Callow, Andrew Challenor, Mark Todd and Jonathan Potts secured second spot with 64 points. Chal, playing off (+5), dutifully delivered the five birdies required of him, alas, only one was worth three points. By way of compensation, Todd’s nett eagle on the Road Hole contributed four points. As a team, they excelled on six holes, equalled expectation on seven but fell short on the 16th and 17th.

Out of the prizes, but worth mentioning, two teams initially tied for third place with 62 points. Graham Harris, Damian McGuinness plus Linda and Stephen Fisk combined to harvest +2 on their back-nine compared to the disappointing -4 from Steven Boyd, Juan Costain, Ross Mulligan and Matthew Ascroft who, together, fired five birdies and an eagle on their ostentatious outward leg.

The top nine teams beat par and ten 2s were recorded on the short holes with the aforementioned Challenor claiming a double dollop from the pot.

Measured by Pete Thomas, Mark Reynolds was rewarded with a box of balls for being NTP at 70cm on the 13th. Alan Bath, witnessed by club captain Phil Games, came closest on the 16th at exactly double that distance: 1.4m.

Wicked weather put paid to both the mid-week and previous Sunday Stablefords so nothing to report there. This coming Saturday a 5-club Pairs Challenge awaits us and on Monday 16th February a fully subscribed 3-day junior golf clinic has been arranged at the Links.

A date for your diary: the start sheet will shortly be available for the Paddy’s Day Scramble, an open competition taking place at Castletown on Saturday 14th March. It will be a four-player competition, so speak to your colleagues and organise your team ahead of the opening date.
