By a margin of two points, Andrew Challenor and ‘range guru’ Jonathan Potts proceeded to post a tremendous six biridie, three bogey, three under par better-ball score of 38 points. This win means that Simcocks Stableford winner Challenor has, so far this season, collected three team prizes including a Shambles Multiplier and the Yellow Ball AM-AM.

Future plans for the development of the old Castletown Golf Links Hotel site were outlined by the new owners Philip and PJ Vermeulen of Langness Golf Course Ltd who, over six months ago, purchased the site from Fort Island Developments Ltd which is part of the Dandara Group.

Despite the weather, there were some surprisingly satisfactory scores. Two teams tied at the top at 13 under par. Winning on countback, club captain Rich Dunn, ably assisted by Alex Holt, Mark Reynolds and Jon Wild, started with back-to-back birdies then incurred their only bogey. A procession of pars led to an outward 36. Six beautiful birdies for a bountiful back-nine of 29 equated to an unbeatable 65, nett 59 after handicap.

A third of the field finished within three points of each other at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday. A six-way countback confirmed Pete Thomas as the winner of the J.Carter Cup. Thomas, who has been concentrating on his chipping, clipped it close to collect (16+17) for 33 winning points.

After two torrential tries, the Steve Keegan Memorial finally took place in glorious golfing weather at Castletown GC on Saturday. Steve would have been delighted that 106 members participated in the purest form of golf, a stroke-play competition, which was his favoured format. Michael Charmer, who opened this season by winning the pairs Texas Scramble with Tom Doherty in early March, bagged another bookend by securing the trophy that commemorates his former four-ball friend. Charmer’s fine five under par performance included six birdies and just one bogey, for a superb 67.

This bogey competition was won by Nicky Vincent from Douglas CG. Her plucky (-1) score was four strokes clear of the field. Playing off a handicap of (15), Vincent parred a third of the holes for plusses and nett parred almost another third. Unfortunately, two of her seven bogeys fell on non-shot holes. Four double bogeys and Vincent’s opening triple bogey completed a creditable card for 91/76.
