POTTS AND TODD OUT ON THEIR OWN

It made a refreshing change to swap damp and dismal for cold and crisp conditions at Castletown Golf Links on Saturday. Disappointingly, only 25 pairs took up the challenge of the 15-hole, 5-club Stableford. There seems to be a troubling trend for certain groups to boycott competitions considered by them to be ‘Mickey Mouse’ golf played for poor prizes lacking sponsorship. Perhaps, a perception the club’s committee needs to address.

‘Range guru’ Jonathan Potts (8) was in fine form, racing round in one over par on all but the three holes which playing partner Mark Todd (1) completed first with two pars and a birdie. Subsequently, the winning pair ended two ahead of the field on 36 points.

The following four finishers posted 34 but conveniently concluded with differing back-nine scores. Coming second with 22, Robert Quine (10) and Jamie Garrett (8) benefitted from Garrett’s great one under par run-in, augmented by Quine’s vital three-pointer on the 14th.

Robert’s brother Iain Quine (3) landed two of his three birdies on the back nine and, aided by Winter League leader William Laughlin (8), they parred the back-nine for 21 points and third place.

Johan Bondegreen (14) and Michael Travers (14) were one back with 20 and, despite being three-under on both legs, Steven Boyd (+3) and Campbell Guy (1) finished fourth with their hard-won closing 19 points.

Guy had the consolation of collecting two dollops from the two’s pot for his eagle on the 1st whilst his partner, Boyd, bagged his bountiful birdie and a box of balls for being NTP on the 16th. Gareth Morris won the tale of the tape to take the TaylorMades on the 13th.

There were no midweek takers but Tommy and Mark Handley ventured out on the previous Sunday. Tommy took the bragging rights with 28 points compared to 21 for Mark who turned at two over but faded away.

This coming Saturday sees the fifth round of the Winter League. Laughlin leads with 53 placement points, followed by Nick Maybin on 31, and then come previous round winners Trevor Boyles, Keith Featherstone and Neil Harris who have 25 apiece.
