MAYBIN’S REGULATION 30 POINTS WINS WINTER LEAGUE 15 HOLER

All round good-guy Dave Quayle - shown above with 2020 Captain Graham Harris - sadly lost his battle with cancer and passed away peacefully at Clatterbridge Hospital on Monday 22nd December. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his widow Angela and all Dave’s family and friends.

Nick Maybin (2) may have been three-under at the turn, but the turn came early as the 7th was squelchy and still closed at Castletown Golf Links on Saturday. Those saved shots were squandered on the next two holes but Maybin won the 15-hole third round of the Winter League as he only dropped two more. 30 regulation Stableford points proved to be spot-on.

Second-placed Steven Boyd (+3) matched Maybin’s three early birdies but added a bogey to turn after six holes on 13 points. His luscious level par back nine included a bogey and a birdie, adding 16 points for 29.

There were three divisions with two prizes apiece, so division one’s allocation had already been allotted. Division two covered handicaps 4 to 8 so third-placed Ross Byrne (9) was the first recipient of a division three award. His 29 points had been similarly scored to Boyd, but finishing with double bogey cost him dear.

Fourth-placed Dan Laughlin (5) took top prize in division two on 28 and then came the first divisional casualty as Guy Pickard (1) lost out with his 27. Conversely, Frankie Doherty (4) was successful as his 27 for sixth place was also eligible to claim the final division two prize.

With just a division three prize left to allocate, Matthew Bell (+2) may have been the first of four players to register 25 points, but the vacant prize went to the president’s parking place charity raffle winner Stephen Fisk (10) who had finished eighth overall.

There were just two birdies on the short holes so Graham Harris and John Ledwidge looked set to share the spoils. Then, Alex Townell pitched in for a double dollop from the two’s pot with his elegant eagle on the 14th. However, Harris and Ledwidge augmented their money with boxes of balls for being NTP on the 13th and 16th respectively.

Bad weather put paid to the mixed midweek 9 and 18-hole competitions but the next batch are scheduled for Christmas Eve and on Saturday 27th December an Xmas Scramble four-ball has been arranged.
