PETE THOMAS CLIPS IT CLOSE TO COLLECT THE J. CARTER CUP

17th fairway - Testing the new irrigation system

A third of the field finished within three points of each other at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday. A six-way countback confirmed Pete Thomas as the winner of the J.Carter Cup. Thomas, who has been concentrating on his chipping, clipped it close to collect (16+17) for 33 winning points.

Former captain Andrew Gerrard saw red at the Road Hole but promptly birdied the next for an outward 17 points. Another birdie was overshadowed by five backend bogeys, so Gerrard recorded 16, for his 33 in second spot.

With a regulation 18, followed by a fading 15, both Simon Willoughby and Patrick Gandy matched their 33s. Whilst Willoughby wangled the remaining division one prize, Gandy went unrewarded along with Mark Todd who eagled the 12th and Liam Cowin who went round in gross 76.

The top division two prize was landed by lobsterman Robert Quine who was the fifth of ten players to post 32 points. The tenth, Ross Byrne down in 16th place, took second. Much to his own surprise, Tim Shallcross filched the remaining prize being the second of the eight competitors who carded a 31.

29 players took part in the mixed midweek Stableford. Steven Boyd bashed in boisterous birdies on the 3rd, 12th, and 14th but ended level after bothersome bogeys on the 7th, 15th and 16th. His winning 36 points was one ahead of Ross Mulligan who went round in one under gross par.

Colin C Magee and the aforementioned Gerrard also posted 35 points in third and fourth place respectively. Next came senior club champion Sam Skelton on 34, which was equalled by the first lady home, Michelle Hooker who secured sixth.

There was more Sunday success for Zoe Campbell who once again beat the boys in the mixed Stableford held on the previous weekend. It may have been the morning after the club’s annual awards evening, but Campbell’s super 35 points dominated the depleted field.

Sore head or not, big hitting Jon Wagstaffe led a line of players on 34 points, including third-placed Michael Charmer who had won the Steve Keegan Memorial with a superb 67 the day before.

Seeking a similar stellar score, Steven Boyd was three under after the first three holes. Turning on 21 points he could only add 13 on a bellicose back-nine so his aggressive play went unrewarded.

This coming Saturday sees the first of the Winter Series, an October four-person Scramble. With several squads seeking a substitute there may be a need for three-balls to split in order to create the winning combination.
