NICKY VINCENT WINS THE BESSIE CAIN MEMORIAL ROSE BOWL COMPETITION

With the wind whipping the waves, ten tenacious ladies set off in a 10:00 shotgun start for the Bessie Cain Rose Bowl competition at Castletown Golf Club on Sunday. This bogey competition was won by Nicky Vincent from Douglas CG. Her plucky (-1) score was four strokes clear of the field.

Playing off a handicap of (15), Vincent -shown above- parred a third of the holes for plusses and nett parred almost another third. Unfortunately, two of her seven bogeys fell on non-shot holes. Four double bogeys and Vincent’s opening triple bogey completed a creditable card for 91/76.

Next, there was a two-way tie on (-5) with Castletown’s vice-captain Claire Walker -shown above- eventually outpacing last year’s winner Jane Holt. -shown below

Walker’s back-nine countback bogey score was (-1) compared to Holt on (-3).

Finishing fourth, the newly crowned club champion Sarah Blackman -shown above- recorded the lowest gross score of 86. She received the longest drive prize for her penetrating punch into the teeth of the wind on the 12th.

Fifth-placed Gigi Fisk was rewarded with the nearest-the-pin prize for her arrow-like accuracy on the 13th. Alas, her birdie, which became a nett hole-in-one, only counted as a single plus in the competition.

Bessie Cain’s grandson Gavin Cleator - shown above with the winner - helped sponsor the event and attended the clubhouse to present the prizes. He mentioned that Bessie, who was the Ladies Island Champion in1969, loved bogey competitions which was why his family chose this format for the annual memorial Rose Bowl competition.
