MICHAEL SAABYE KATKJAER WINS TWO OUT OF THREE KNOCKOUT TITLES

Sad to say, the weather caused the postponement of the Steve Keegan Memorial at Castletown Golf Links on Saturday. The rescheduled J. Carter Cup takes place this coming Saturday, so Steve’s commemoration competition has been rescheduled for Saturday 11th October. This is also the date of the club’s annual prize presentation dinner.

Midweek, the Yellow-sponsored mixed Stableford was won by Alan Bath who nett eagled the 7th for four of his 38 points. Ian Jones played the par 3s in two-under-par, securing second spot on 36 points.

On the same score, Richard ‘Tic’ Connolly came a cropper on the ‘gorge-us’ 18th, so had to settle for third. Three birdies led George McArdle to fourth place with 35 points, one ahead of Dan Williams who raced round in eight over par.

The first lady home was Jo Duncan in sixth place overall. Her 34 points came from 13 scoring holes and included a four-pointer par on the 1st. For her efforts, Duncan receives the Anne Eades Trophy.

Pauline Mongan, who specializes in albatrosses, netted another on the 3rd, helping her lift the runners-up prize ahead of Bridget Hosty who amassed her 33 points from just 11 scoring holes.

All the summer knockout competitions are now complete and Michael Saabye Katkjaer -shown above- almost made it a clean sweep. He had won the W. Kirkpatrick Men’s Singles Trophy defeating Neville Peterson Memorial Cup winner Ernie Russell, one up, in the closely contested final.

Then, ably assisted by Tami James, Katkjaer lifted the Sissons Mixed Pairs Matchplay Trophy after an epic encounter in the final, winning (2&1) against Aaron Hawley and Sarah Wignall.

All was progressing to plan in the Steve Bradshaw Men’s Pairs Matchplay final, he and playing partner Marc Mitchell were one-up with three to play.

Then, as in previous rounds, Brian Kelly and Michael Kinmond timed their finish to perfection, taking the last three holes to capture the cup.

In the Barker Knockout Ladies Singles Matchplay final Claire Walker made the most of her more than one stroke per hole handicap advantage to take the title.

Walker was playing against the recently crowned Island Strokeplay Champion Sarah Jane Blackman and, despite being outgunned, was certainly not overpowered. The winning margin was (2&1) for Walker.

Ladies from across the island are reminded that they too could enjoy the sweet smell of success by taking part in the Bessie Cain Rose Bowl. This open competition is a 10:00am shotgun start, taking place on Sunday 5th October.  The entry fee for non-members is £40.
