SUNTERA SERIES SUCCESS FOR DOHERTY, CHALLENOR AND MAGEE

Less than half the original entrants turned out for the final round of this season’s Suntera-sponsored series monthly medal. Not surprising, given the wet weather at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday.

Winter League specialist Frankie Doherty (10) - shown above - demonstrated his resilience, romping round to post nett 64 and win by three clear strokes. Doherty’s tremendous two over par performances included a birdie on the 4th, then three bogeys, before an uninterrupted procession of pars.

Four bogeys on the front-nine were followed by three more on the inward leg, but second-placed Andrew Davies (11) stayed well clear of the field with a battling birdie on the 14th. His nett 67 being three better than the next player.

Former club champion Andrew Challenor (+1) fired five birdies before finishing with back-to-back bogeys. His gross 69 was the best of the day and placed him third on the day.

More importantly, based on the best four from six possible rounds, Challenor was crowned the Suntera series winner. His 9 under par cumulative gross score of 279 was three better than Steven Boyd in second on 282. David Quayle was third with his gross cumulative 300.

After two birdies Colin C. Magee (12) was only four over with five to play on Saturday. Then, three double bogeys corrupted his card, so Magee had to settle for fourth on the day with 83, nett 71. However, this result projected Magee to the top of the nett cumulative table which he won with 283 compared to Brian Kelly and then Guy Pickard who were both one shot back on 284.

Despite a slippery seven on the 4th, after four birdies, Martin Young (6) was only one over with five holes to play on Saturday. Unfortunately, these were all bogeyed, so Young came fifth on nett 72.

Robert Quine (16), Steve Weston (11) and Michael Kinmond (13) carded soggy 73s and finished in that order but, with the depleted field, all went unrewarded.

President of Tynwald, Laurence Skelly, paid his money and submitted his card for the Yellow-sponsored midweek Stableford. Having parred half the holes and amassed 33 winning points, Skelly was disappointed to find that, unfortunately due to poor weather, no-one else took part.

Building on the season’s success, Magee - shown above with Mel Todd - was out again duly winning the latest round of the Ramsey Crookall - sponsored Stableford on Sunday. His two birdies on the back-nine proved pivotal for countback purposes.

Similarly scoring 37 points, Sarah Jane Blackman (5), - shown above - whose handicap index has dropped by an incredible (12.7) this season, was luscious level par with four to play. Bogeys on each of those pushed her back to second place.

Five birdies in his level par round proved to be insufficient for Michael Charmer, as playing off (+1) it was only worth 35 points and third place.

This coming Yellow-Wednesday, the Anne Eades Trophy will be awarded to the top-finishing lady. Last year this was won by Maryann Dunn on countback against Michelle Hooker. They both scored 35 points.

On Saturday, all tees are available for the Steve Keegan Memorial. This medal competition is open to both men and women. Gez Bradley is the trophy holder and in 2023, the aforementioned Andrew Challenor, a long-term playing partner of Steve, poignantly won the inaugural event.
