Timed to perfection, this week the greenkeepers at Castletown Golf Links verticut, seeded and sanded (top-dressed) the greens just before the heavens opened. Hence, for the Greenkeeper’s Benefit Stableford on Saturday, there was little evidence of the essential work that had been undertaken. Members were invited to make a tangible demonstration of their appreciation of the ongoing efforts of Colin Ainslie and his dedicated team.
With the 14th and 15th temporarily closed for irrigation installation work, this 16-hole competition was won with a regulation 32 Stableford points. Both Tim Shallcross (16) and Robert Quine (16) shared the same score.
Having been the unlucky countback casualty last week, fast-finishing Shallcross, shown above inputting this week's winning score, suffered his two N/Rs on the front-nine, whereas Quine had one on each leg and also double bogeyed the 10th. However, Quine did have the consolation of collecting the nearest-the-pin (NTP) prize on the 16th.
Third-placed Keith Featherstone (13) was the first of three players to post 30 points and his two on the 13th was one of only five registered on the day. Landing close, Featherstone also took the NTP prize.
With all division two prizes already allocated, fourth-placed Colin E Magee (12) went unrewarded. His 30 points came from 13 scoring holes including an N/R on the ‘gorge-us' 18th.
John Newson (5) came fifth with his 30 points and ended up a double prize winner. He headed division one and although missing his birdie putt, Newson’s tee-shot won NTP on the 8th.
Seven competitors carded 29 points. After countback, Jaco Jansen (6) just edged out Daryl Callister (+2) for second spot in division one. Callister collected third and his one-over-par round was the lowest of the day.
Chris Dunn (19), Matt Ascroft (11), Colin C Magee (9), Dan Williams (6) and the metronomic Mel Todd (12) finished in that order on 29. Their only accolade was to complete the top twelve.
Wet weather caused the cancellation of the Yellow-sponsored midweek Stableford. The series continues into October, as does the Ramsey Crookall - sponsored Sunday series. This coming Saturday sees the concluding round of the Suntera Global-sponsored series of monthly medals.
Lady golfers from across the island should note that the entry sheet for the Bessie Cain Rose Bowl is still open. This shotgun bogey competition starts at 10:00am on Sunday 5th October. Last year this competition was won by Jane Holt on +3. The non-member enter fee is £40. Call Oli Taylor in the pro-shop on 822211 if you can’t enter online.
