Impending inclement weather caused the J. Carter Trophy competition to be replaced by a non-qualifying 16-hole Stableford at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday. The intention is to ‘Get Carter’ rearranged for October.
With the course looking ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’, 46 players rushed round before we were ‘Singing in the Rain’ and hoping it would lead to the ‘Green, Green Grass of Home’.
Someone who felt the ‘Rhythm of the Rain’ was defence advocate Jim Travers (17). Other than a blobby snowman on the 6th, Travers persistently parred and nett parred his way to 33 winning points.
Impressively, with three blobs on his card, Tim Shallcross (16) scored the same points, but his 33 was over-influenced by a beautiful birdie on the 3rd. Consequently, Shallcross came second.
Three players posted par, their 32 points scored in a variety of ways. Dermot Hamill’s (11) three nett birdies on the back-eight bagged him third place overall and top place in division one.
Dropping three of his four shots on the run-in, Bryan McMahon (5) came next, just ahead of Austin McGuire (9) who compensated for two nil-pointers with a four-pointer birdie on the 18th.
Four finished on 31 points and, with only one division two place unallocated, this went to Kyle McConnell (17) ahead of former captain Geoff Sugden (29) who bagged a brace of nett eagles. Unfortunately, they were on his front-eight. Colin C Magee (9) and Andrew Davies (11) were discounted due to their handicap.
Poor morning weather suppressed support for the Yellow-sponsored 17-hole midweek Stableford. Only nine players participated and there was a two-way tie at the top on 32 points. Countback was convoluted as their splits were identical on both legs with the exception that the eventual winner, Simon Murray, parred the 9th whereas Oli Taylor sustained a bogey. Third-placed Mark Handley, on 31, was in contention until back-to-back N/Rs on the 14th and 15th.
On the previous Sunday, Pauline Mongan (36) -shown above- was the worthy winner of the Ramsey Crookall-sponsored series Stableford. Her 43 points included not one, but two nett holes-in-one. The first, a stunning six-pointer eagle on the par five 3rd, was followed by a five-pointer birdie on the 6th.
Tommy Handley (19), in second on 41, enjoyed his own nett hole-in-one with his second nett eagle of the round when he tapped in a two on the par three 16th. For the second Sunday running Laurence Skelly made it onto the podium. His 38 points included seven nett birdies.
This coming weekend Andrew Challenor and Sam Skelton will be out to retain their champion and senior champion titles for the third time running. The TISE-sponsored Club Championship will be played over 36 holes with the opening round taking place on Saturday and the final round on Sunday.
