Round five of the Suntera-sponsored monthly Medal took place at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday.
This was aptly won by Oli Taylor -shown above- who escaped from pro-shop duties to take advantage of the favourable afternoon conditions and secure his third podium prize of the week. His winning super six-over-par 78/68 included three birdies, eight pars, five bogeys and two double bogeys.
In the last group out, big, but erratic hitter, Mark Davenport parred a third of his holes and nett parred all but three of the remainder. Despite double bogeys on the 7th and 13th, Davenport was in pole position. Unfortunately, a slippery seven on the 18th dropped him back to second on 89/69.
Hugo Hayata and new overseas junior playing partners Seb Rothwell, Charlie Reynolds and Theo James have been practicing and playing 36 holes most days this past week or so. Such dedication paid off for Hayata who finished third with 91/71, and Rothwell who was fourth on 84/72.
Playing in the worst of the wind, Bryan McMahon produced a tidy round of nine over par to take fifth place on 81/73. Many of the morning players failed to complete the course. The attrition rate was over forty percent, and the best gross score was an unusually high 80. This was minted by Simon Murray who also recorded one of only seven twos achieved upon the day.
Earlier in the week irrigation work was reaching fruition so only 15 holes were in operation for the Yellow-sponsored midweek Stableford. Senior club champion Sam Skelton showed his skill, sinking six birdies in what would have been a four under par lap had he not N/R’d the 9th.
Skelton’s 34 points was one ahead of the aforementioned Taylor who ran up two birdies in his five over par excursion. Gareth Kimber topped division two with 32 points and Allan Hav Thomsen just pipped Mike Horsthuis to the final division one prize with their 31s.
Hugo Hayata and Michelle Hooker had their own countback contest for the remaining division two placement prizes. Both carded 30 points, but two nett eagles on Hayata’s back nine proved pivotal.
On the previous weekend, Jonathan Hall hoisted 34 points to win the 16-hole Ramsey Crookall-sponsored Sunday series premier prize. Hall finished two points ahead of Taylor who, as mentioned above, went on to fashion three podium placement prizes in the week.
Jon Wagstaffe held off both Rory and Diane Neale for third place. They all scored 31 points, but Wagstaffe finished with five pars which they could not match.
This coming Wednesday, in conjunction with the Yellow-sponsored Stableford, the ladies compete for The Stephen Trophy which is currently held by Tami James. On Saturday, Phil Games hopes you can join him to play for his Vice-Captain’s Trophy.
