THUNDERCLAPS CAUSE CAPTAIN’S DAY CHAOS

Sadly, Saturday’s thunderclaps caused Captain’s Day chaos at Castletown GC. The ‘fun-day’ event had to be postponed and will now take place on 12th July.

During the week the Yellow-sponsored Stableford attracted 31 entrants. Ongoing irrigation work meant the 11th hole was out of commission, so 34 points was the benchmark. Nearly half the field achieved this, or better.

Using less than half his handicap, Steve McCafferty collated 41 winning points from his Road Hole birdie, nine pars, six nett pars and a slippery six on the 9th.  One point behind, Claire Walker finished with a beautiful birdie on the 18th. Netting that albatross, and two earlier eagles, more than made up for her three nil-pointers.

Third-placed Zoë Campbell began her back-nine (eight actually) by bagging a birdie for four of her countback counting 19 points. Campbell, along with David Allan, Tom Doyle, Mark Davenport and Paul Keeley had all carded 37 points and finished in that order. Davenport had been in pole-position but blobbed the last two holes.

On the previous weekend, Tim Callow stepped in with 39 points to walk away with the Ramsey Crookall-sponsored mixed Stableford Sunday series premier prize. His winning margin was an impressive four points ahead of David Beard, the Admiral of the Manx herring fleet and countback casualty Keith Featherstone who fished up the final podium place.

MAC Group, in partnership with the captains of the club, have selected ‘Forget Me Not’ as their charity of the year. A major fund-raising golf day takes place at the Links this Thursday 19th June. Consequently, the course is closed for general play from 08:00 until 16:00.

This coming Saturday sees the Neville Peterson Memorial Stableford which, last year, was won by former president Steve McGowan who shot a lovely level par back-nine off the back tees.

The Capital International-sponsored Castletown Cup takes place on Saturday 28th June. Being an open competition, it is hoped that golfers from far and wide will wish to experience the ‘links- effect’ for a mere £40. Book online or telephone 822211 to make your reservation.
