DUNCAN DONALD RECALIBRATES TO WIN SUNTERA GLOBAL MEDAL

Recently returned from golfing with his son Scott in America, Duncan Donald - both shown above - may have been ‘California Dreamin’ when he left his putts short.  Never-the-less, Donald converted enough to win the Suntera-sponsored monthly medal at Castletown GC on Saturday.

Donald (11) started with a bogey and added another on the 6th. Bunkered, he double bogeyed the next. Subsequently, Donald dropped just three more shots and his winning 79, nett 68, was his best round since coming second in the Syd Ashworth Trophy last August.

Four fellows finished on nett 69 and had to be separated on countback. With a tremendous two under par back-nine Dave Quayle (3) secured second spot. His luscious level par round included three birdies and three bogeys.

At just six-over with four to play, Steve Zybert (15) was sitting pretty with two portions from the 2’s pot. Even at nine-over with one to play Zybert was leading. A triple bogey on the ‘un-four-gettable’ 18th saw him tumble to third.

With another sad story, Malcolm Lambert (16) four-putted his way to fourth place with a dastardly double bogey on the 16th. Otherwise, three birdies and a couple of silly sevens broke up the bogeys in his 85/69 round.

Chris Kneen (1) crafted the best gross score, but the clubhouse credit for coming fifth with 70, nett 69, was superior. This allowed scratch golfer Daryl Callister to claim some credit with his ‘next’ best gross score of 72. Steven Boyd lost out having utilized the white tees, whereas Callister chose the blacks.

Four players braved the elements in the Yellow-sponsored midweek Stableford. The podium places were taken by former captains Mike Horsthuis - shown above -, Michelle Hooker and Louna Vermeulen. They finished in that order with 31, 29 and 27 points respectively. Stuart Butler came fourth with 25 points.

On the previous Sunday, Matthew Ascroft (12) was the countback winner in the Ramsey Crookall sponsored series of mixed Stablefords. His 31 points included a couple of early N/Rs, but 20 points on the back nine saw him home.

Dan Williams used up his five strokes on the front nine. Scoring similar on the inward leg, Williams had to settle for second. Michael Charmer was at sixes and sevens on the front nine, then normal service resumed, so he claimed third with a lowly 28 points.

This coming Saturday there are full start sheets for the joint Captain’s ‘fun-day’ two-ball. Rich Dunn - shown above - will be raising funds for ‘Forget-Me-Not’ by taking on challengers on the short 13th. Belinda Pilling will dispense snacks and refreshments. Another drink, courtesy of the club, will be available in the Salt & Swing Bar.

Please note that the start sheet has now opened for the Capital International sponsored Castletown Cup being held on Saturday 28th June. This is an open medal competition being played off the white tees. Visitors are welcome and their entry fee is £40.
