JACO JANSEN CLEANS UP ON CAPTAIN’S DAY

2023/24 Suntera series nett aggregate winner Jaco Jansen (8) cleaned up on Captain’s Day at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday.

Firstly, he precisely predicted that captain Richard Dunn would fizz his ceremonial, charity drive 225 yards.

Fittingly, the prize was a prestige bottle of booze.

Next, after the drive-in, at which president Barry Watts presented Dunn with a plaque, Jansen (8) posted luscious level par, with three birdies and three bogeys. His reward for 44 prodigious points, a gold plated sterling silver coin to be presented by the captain.

Second on Saturday with 43 points, John Nuisance (11) also produced par golf, well, at least on the front-nine. Clubhouse leader at the turn with 24 points, Nuisance niggled in four bogeys which slightly blighted his back-nine.

40 points proved popular, six scored the same, so countback came into consideration for third place. Oli Steriopulos sculpted an inward 21 points to take the remaining division one placement prize (handicaps up to 12).

Alas, for Mark Haywood (10), Dermot Hamill (12) and Neil Cartwright (9) in 4th, 6th and 8th places respectively. They were ineligible for the division two prizes which went to Jim Travers (17), Kevin Madin (24) plus John Clifford (17) who was the best of three competitors to card a 39.

The introduction of the red stakes ‘lateral water hazard’ on the Road Hole favoured scratch player Steven Boyd. He blasted in a birdie from the beach on his way to a two under par 70 and so bagged the best-gross prize. Congratulations also go to Colin C Magee for his ace on the 13th.

Earlier in the week 38 players supported the ‘Yellow’ sponsored series of midweek mixed Stablefords. This was well and truly won by Michelle Hooker (24) who parred a third of the holes to hoist 44 points, five better than the field.

Diane Neale (15) enjoyed a tremendous two over par back-nine to pip Karen Thomas (31) for second place on 39. Dickie Corrin (11) was the first fellow home with 38 and he was closely followed by a phalanx of players on 37.

On the previous Sunday the youngest ever Castletown Cup winner, Gwendolyn Fisk, pipped her parent, Linda, and the aforementioned Neale to top spot in the opening round of this year’s series of Ramsey Crookall sponsored Sunday Stablefords. They each posted 38 points, one ahead of Alex Townell and Jon Wagstaffe. Ten others took part, but they didn’t beat their handicaps.

This coming Saturday see the start of the Suntera series of medal competitions. Entrants for the W. Kirkpatrick and Steve Bradford knockout competitions are also reminded that the first round should be played by 5th May.
