BYE BYE BOB TAYLOR - OUR FISHERMAN FRIEND

Opinions about yellow ball betterball competitions can be somewhat jaundiced by frustrating failures and jettisoned good scores. The format favours finer players who can be relied on under pressure and relish the freedom to attack the pin knowing that at least one of them is bound to bag a birdie.

Eclipsing all the others, club champion Andrew Challenor and senior club champion Sam Skelton nabbed nine birdies and an eagle between them. Ably assisted by Mark Todd and Jonathan Potts, the top team undercut par by ten strokes. Their winning 82 Stableford points was five better than the field.

Despite having a cumulative negative handicap of (-9) Daryl Callister, Chris Kneen, Robert Noon and Lee Morgan dovetailed to deliver 11 birdies. Considering that Callister carded a disappointing double bogey on the 14th their seven under par score was impressive. It was worth 77 points and second place.

The only others to beat par were Dave Litton, Bryan McMahon, Jaco Jansen and Dermot Hamill. Their 73 was one better than three other teams who escaped the elements to post parity. Horizontal rain caused some later starters to seek sanctuary in the Salt & Swing Clubhouse Café.

Talking of which, from the beginning of April we look forward to welcoming Melroy Perera whose curries were legendary when he honed his hospitality skills as a chef at the Shore Hotel, Gansey. Melroy is a seasoned professional, dedicated to delivering exceptional dining experiences.

Having removed the back-nine round which skewed the results table of the ladies’ (front-nine) Winter Eclectic 9-hole competition, Louna Vermeulen was duly declared the winner. Her six under par score of 31 was equalled by Claire Walker, who had nett-eagled the 1st, and so lost out in a final six countback.

Regretfully, it is time to say our fond goodbyes to our fisherman friend Bob Taylor (shown above) whose celebration of life takes place at Douglas Borough Crematorium on Friday 4th April at 2:00pm. Bob, was 80 years young when he suddenly died of heart failure in mid-February. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Mourning clothes are only optional. Wear what you are comfortable in.

Meanwhile, golf goes on with the ‘Yellow’ sponsored midweek Stableford series beginning this Wednesday. This coming Saturday the summer season opens with the George Woods Bogey Cup which, last year, was won by Callum Brookes with a +3 score.
