MURRAY MAKES A RECORD 51 POINTS AND DOHERTY WINS WINTER LEAGUE

There was certainly no need for Sam Murray (24) to play it again, as he won the final round of the Winter League at Castletown Golf Club by seven clear points. Murray’s record breaking 51 Stableford points came from two birdies, six pars and nine bogeys, four of which converted to nett pars. Only the Road Hole caused consternation, but even then, Murray’s double bogey became a two-pointer par.

Motoring into second spot, Stuart Butler (22) served up an uninterrupted sequence of pars and nett pars. His 86/64 included two double bogeys and translated to 44 points coming from eight nett birdies and ten nett pars.

The category one winner Lee Morgan (3) was four under following an enterprising eagle on the 4th. Three bogeys followed but Morgan reached four under again until the 17th, so he ended on 69 for 42 points and third place.

Jaco Jansen (5) was level par until bogeys on the 9th and 13th required him to birdie the 15th and 18th in order to restore parity. Jansen’s 72/67 was worth 41 points, fourth place overall and second spot in category one.

Mike Hewison (13) also accumulated 41 points to take the final division two placement prize. A posse of plays posted 40 points but only Dickie Corrin (8) profited. He purloined the remaining premier prize even though both Chris Kneen (+3) and Laim Cowin (+3) shot stunning seven under par 65s.

After eight rounds, Cowin had the consolation of winning the gross eclectic prize. His 17 under par 55 was two better than Steven Boyd and four ahead of Martin Young. Only the 17th eluded Cowin’s birdie bonanza.

Richard Wild needed countback to wrest the nett eclectic prize away from Frankie Doherty who was the runaway winner of the Winter League. Wild’s back-nine was eight under par compared to Doherty’s mere six under score. They both finished on nett 55. Jimmy Kelly and the aforementioned Cowin came next on nett 56.

Doherty - shown above - who finished 14th on Saturday with 38 Stableford points picked up a further two placement points to pocket the Winter League lolly. His 67 points came from six scoring rounds including 2nd, 3rd and 4th places, plus a 12th and two 14th finishes. Ian Souter was second with 43 points, and Bryan McMahon took third with 39.

In the midweek Stableford Mark Walker and senior club champion Sam Skelton both stepped in with 39 points. Walker won on countback and Gez Bradley came third on 38 points after his two under par performance.

A back-six countback was needed to determine the winner of the penultimate round of the ladies’ 9-hole midweek Stableford series. Lady captain Belinda Pilling took the honours ahead of Claire Walker. They both carded 19 points but Pilling’s 12 over the last six holes was two better than Walker. One point back, Sophie Cope N/R’d the 1st but finished strongly to snaffle third spot ahead of Louna Vermeulen.

24 competitors participated in the previous Sunday’s mixed Stableford. Lee Morgan (4) went round in a fantastic four under par to win with 44 points. Dan Williams (5) was just three over par as runner-up with 38 points. Six birdies and three bogeys gave Robert Noon the final podium place on 36 points.

A yellow-ball AM-AM this coming Saturday marks the culmination of the winter season and knockout pairs and singles competitions begin from 1st April.
