36 teams took part in the Paddy’s Day Texas Scramble at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday. This open competition was won by the Mount Murray marauders: John Batty, Paul Cilia, Richard Mulhern and John Stevens - a former member at the links.
Four birdies and two bogeys placed them mid pack at the halfway point but, having adjusted to the pace of the greens, seven super back-nine birdies boosted them to top spot on 63, nett 52 after handicap.
Countback was needed to determine second spot. Alan Bath, Wayne Egerton, Andrew McGee and Anderson Whamond added four birdies to their front-nine five to finish on 63, nett 54. This was equalled by Jamie Garrett, Iain Quine, Richard Wild and Robert Quine who carded eleven birdies, seven on the front and four on the back, for 61, nett 54. However, handicap worked in favour of the former team.
The next four teams all ended on nett 55 with the most impressive being the 14 under par gross score achieved by Michael Moore, Matthew Nicholson, Stuart Wallace and Harry Wilson representing Mount Murray GC. Having impressively birdied all but four holes they were stymied by their derisory (3) team handicap.
Twelve players took part in the midweek Stableford which was won by Guy Pickard. His six over par 78 converted to 35 points, 18 of which came on the all important back-nine. This was because Steven Boyd who, at two under par, signed for the same points but became the countback casualty having double bogeyed the final hole.
Andy Lagden purloined the remaining podium place on 33, the same score as senior club champion Sam Skelton who uncharacteristically bogeyed the final four holes.
Fine weather enticed 19 players out for the previous Sunday’s mixed Stableford. Karen Murphy stepped in with 39 winning points from 17 scoring holes including a neat nett eagle on the 4th.
A nifty nine pars in a row raised Neil Cartwright to 36 points after 17 holes but a luscious level par back nine eluded him when he double bogeyed the ‘gully-ball’ 18th. However, Cartwright’s late run to 37 points was enough to hold off third-placed Dan Williams who had motored out to 22 points at the turn then spluttered back for just 15.
This coming Saturday sees the 8th and final round of the Winter League. Whether Frankie Doherty can be caught is debatable. He holds a 12 points lead over Ian Souter but, with 25 placement points for a win, there are eight players who are in with a chance.
