Fifty-five teams took part in the two-person Texas Scramble at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday. It was a medal competition with each team’s handicap set at 35 percent of the lowest plus 15 percent of the highest handicap. This favoured the better players, although all but eight of the teams managed to meet or beat their handicap.
Winning by an impressive three shots, scratch players Michael Charmer and Tommy Doherty birdied all but seven holes to finish gross/nett 61. Doherty dominated early on, completing his compulsory six tee shots by the 8th hole. By then, they were lying at 6 under par.
Former Castletown Cup winner Charmer (shown above) completed his compulsory cardings by the 14th where they knocked in their ninth birdie. Two more were to follow as they completed the course with three threes in a row.
There was a three-way tie on nett 64 for second place which had to be determined by countback. Jaco Jansen and Daniel Laughlin (67/64) were left smiling as, after handicap, their three under par run-in was half a point better than their closest rivals.
Only the back-six holes on the front-nine could separate Neil Cartwright/Terry Ditchfield from Steve McGowan/Roger Raatgever. Both teams finished at four under par on 68/64 and both had bagged two birdies on their back-nine and completed their front-nine at two under.
However, McGowan and Raatgever’s bogey on the 8th cost them as their elegant eagle on the 3rd was excluded from the final-six countback. It is just as well that no more prizes were on offer as the next twelve teams all carded 65s.
This coming Saturday the seventh round of the Winter League is scheduled but your attention should be drawn to the Paddy’s Day Scramble on Saturday 15th March. This is an open competition, and the entry sheet is filling up fast. Non-members can join in the fun for just £40 per person.
