Almost windless weather for the third leg of the Winter League helped produce some extraordinary rounds and plenty of super scores at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday.
At four under par, Chris Kneen (+3) - shown above - crafted the best gross score even though it was only worth 37 points. However, after three rounds, Kneen now leads the gross eclectic leaderboard at 9 under, which is 1 ahead of Steven Boyd and Alan Rowe.
Dermot Hamill (14) demonstrated that practice, dedication and skill can coalesce into a round to remember. But for the Road Hole, Hamill could have signed for a wonderful one over par round. His prodigious 22 outward points were surpassed with an absolutely outstanding inward 24. Hence, Hamill amassed an amazing 46 winning points and now heads the nett eclectic leaderboard on 12 under par.
Having ‘shot his age’ just three weeks ago, David Allan (11) declined too much publicity after orchestrating a tremendous ‘two under his age’ achievement on Saturday. So, with hardly a fanfare, let alone ‘Seventy-six Trombones’* Allan’s fantastic 43 points for second place will remain relatively unheralded. (* Signature song from the musical and film ‘The Music Man’).
Ian Souter (12) knew the difference between try and triumph was a little umph. Used to leaving it short, seven single putts put a pep in his step, so Souter signed for a 77 for his 43 points to take the third and final prize for the division two players. Consequently, both Ashley Chase (16) and Simon Willoughby (12) went unrewarded on 42 points.
Bryan McMahon (8) collected the division one top award with his three over par round worth 41 points, and seventh placed Paul Reid (8) was the runner-up with 40 points. Robert Braide (4) shot a one under par front-nine and stepped in with 39 points for the final placement prize.
After three rounds Frankie Doherty, who came twelfth on Saturday, now tops the Winter League leaderboard with 37 points and is second in the nett eclectic on 72/61. Richard Connolly and Steven Glynn are second and third in the Winter League with 34 and 33 points respectively.
This coming Saturday we are back to team golf with a 5 club pairs competition set to befuddle us.
