CLEAR VISION AND GREAT FOCUS WINS 20/20 STABLEFORD

In Saturday’s 20/20 team Stableford Dave Litton, Anthony O’Mahony, Bryan McMahon and Dermot Hamill’s vision was clear. In order to win they needed to average at least 5 or 6 points per hole and could not afford to focus on anything less than nett par.

With just 20 Stableford scores to count on each half, the strategy was simple enough on the earlier holes, but the pressure built as choices made could not be retrospectively amended. Litton logged 25 points over ten ten holes. O’Mahony did the same, but over one more hole. McMahon was the MVP and  carded 30 on twelve holes, enabling Hamill to bring home the bacon with the final 17 of their 97 winning points.

By rejecting their derisory efforts on the Road Hole, and having registered just one score on the 2nd, Phil Games, Mike Horsthuis, Damian McGuinness and Matthew Bell required three scores on five of the other early holes. Their ten-pointer on the 6th vindicated this bold decision. A further four birdies on the back nine nabbed them 96 points and second place.

Initially, three teams tied for third place with 94 points. After countback the spoils went to Paul Eckersley, Pete Thomas, Dave Bowen and Jaco Jansen. They dropped a point on the 9th but then  enjoyed a purple patch scoring 29 of their back-nine 50 points over the next four holes.

Despite a nine-pointer on the 14th, Guy Pickard, David Allan, Jim and Michael Travers fell one point short on countback and finished fourth ahead of Graham Harris, Donald Buchanan, Duncan Donald and Stephen Fisk who peaked early with 11 points and 10 points on the 4th and 7th holes respectively.

Christmas meant there were no midweek matches. The next scheduled competition is the third round of the Winter League which takes place this coming Saturday. There is room for the odd player looking to squeeze in before 11:00 and after that there are tee times aplenty for four-balls looking to venture out.

Happy New Year, good health and great golfing to one and all.
