Ian Souter appears to be bowing to the sunrise or perhaps is in awe of seeing Snowdonia on the horizon.
The second round of the Winter League took place at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday in relatively calm conditions. Steven Glynn (17) stormed into an early lead but was blown off-course on the Road Hole. Glynn breezed back with four nett birdies in a row and could afford a nil pointer on the 17th and still win by two Stableford points with ‘naughty-40’.
Martin Young (4) had a game of two halves in second place with 38 points. Having squandered his stroke allowance with four bogeys in a row, Young later fired four 3s in succession for a tremendous two under par back nine.
Five birdies and a bogey secured Steven Boyd a glorious gross 68, but off (+3) it was only worth 37 points for third place plus a portion from the 2’s pot. Frankie Doherty (7), who was runner-up in the previous round, came fourth and took the final division one prize with 36 points.
Mark Reid (2) and Alan Rowe (2) went unrewarded in fifth and sixth place respectively but Richard Connolly (12), who won the last round, pocketed another prize by finishing second in division two on 35 points.
Way down in thirteenth place Jamie Garrett (13) will consider himself lucky to land the final divisional prize with a moderately low 34 points. Birdies on the 8th and 13th gained Simon Murray a double dollop from the short-hole treasure trough.
David Quayle’s wonderful one under par round was worth 39 points and first place in the men’s midweek Stableford. A back six countback determined second spot in Brian Bodell’s favour. He, along with Peter Easthope and fourth placed Mark Reid all carded 36 points.
There was no ladies’ midweek competition but this coming Saturday all members have been invited to participate in an Xmas Scramble. At least four teams are looking for an extra player and there are numerous tee slots still available.
Compliments of the season, everybody.
