It was good to see Graham Harris and his son Neil - shown above - enjoying some quality time together. Neil, who is now based in Switzerland, is over on a visit.
The 2021 W. Kirkpatrick singles matchplay champion and AON Trophy winner Jim Travers added this month's Suntera medal to his tally at Castletown Golf Club on Saturday. Playing from the White tees Travers was in receipt of 22 shots, and only needed 13 to complete the course. His fine 85, nett 63, featured a birdie on the 4th after a superb approach shot stopped and plopped by the pin. Another on the 11th resulted in a nett hole-in-one.
Wayne Lewthwaite (17) was just six over par with only the 18th standing between him and possible victory. A dastardly pin position left Lewthwaite at a loss, and he ended with a wobbly eight for 82, nett 65, and second place.
Starting with back-to back birdies Alan Rowe (5) was still two under par after a third beautiful birdie on the 17th. Finishing with a disappointing bogey Rowe's level par back nine proved pivotal on countback for third place on nett 66.
Malcolm Lambert (14) covered 16 holes in three over par ignoring the double bogey beginning. Then equanimity evaporated when a sickening slice led to a silly seven and Lambert frustratingly finished fourth with his nett 66.
Brian Kelly (15) triumphed in the three-way tie for the remaining placement prize. His 67 was fractionally better than the countback casualties Russel Kelly (13) and the recent W.E. Holmes cup winner David Allan (15).
Although Michael Charmer shot 71 off the white tees PJ Vermeulen was awarded the Best Gross prize for a steady 72 from the more difficult black tees despite bothersome bogeys at the 16th and 17th.
In the men's midweek Stableford Chris Westerman (19) edged out the aforementioned David Allan and also Dan Hattersley (6). They all posted 36 points. Linda Fisk (17) took the lady's prize on 28 points although only two competitors took part.
An eight-man team participated in the second round of the Combined Senior's round robin competition involving five clubs, on this occasion at Peel GC on Friday. Congratulations go to Ian Jones & Stuart Brawn for our only win. Your correspondent and Ian Souter scraped a draw, but the pairings of Graham Harris & Simon Murray and Geoff Sugden & Peter McKenna were unsuccessful. At this early-stage Peel lead the league, closely followed by Rowany. Castletown, Mount Murray and Ramsey all share third place.
Two of our diligent and dedicated greenkeepers going round in every decreasing circles on the aptly named Racecourse Hole.
This coming Saturday should have seen twin shotgun starts with a lunchtime prize presentation wedged between. However, this has since been postponed for two weeks and a Club Stableford has been put in its place.
