DERBYSHIRE AND CROSBIE WRAP-UP THE MID WEEKERS

For the second weekend in succession inclement weather caused the cancellation of competition golf at Castletown.

It might look as pretty as a picture, but on Saturday snow stopped play at the Links. Not that anyone really wanted to battle against the gale force wind which had scourged the island for the past few days.

Luckily, the Beast from the East was slightly subdued on the previous Wednesday allowing 34 players, wrapped up well, to take up the challenge of the midweek nine-hole Stableford. There was a three-way tie for top spot on 18 points in the men’s event which had to be settled on a last six countback.

In third place Peter Thomas (3) had started sublimely with three triple pointers and he parred the 4th to remain at two under gross par. Unfortunately, for Thomas five bogeys followed for a mere nine points in the card play-off. Second placed Gerry Ganly (6) parred the first three holes but then six straight bogeys produced only ten points for play-off purposes.

The countback king Martin Derbyshire (6) matched Ganly’s gross score of 43 but his three pars and six bogeys were more favourably interspersed. Crucially, Derbyshire’s nett birdie on the 6th helped boost his total to eleven points on the run-in.

Helen Crosbie (22) landed two nett eagles on her way to a slender victory with 21 points in the women’s event. With a super steady round the Leighton Cup holder Jane Holt (10) captured two nett birdies and seven nett pars for 20 points and second place. Ramsey GC home-club member Cathy Clucas (30) began with back-to-back nett eagles and could have finished higher than third place. With 19 points in the bag and three shots to play with Clucas frustratingly N/R’d the last hole.

Ground preparation work is currently being undertaken adjacent to the existing practice putting green close to the clubhouse. The intention is to bring into being an extended short-game practice area including three bunkers. The work is being undertaken by our skilled green-keepers and will be funded by way of a matching grant from the R&A and England Golf’s Covid-19 support fund.

The course owners have also invested in additional premium quality Huxley golf mats which will come into play on every hole from now on until at least the Spring. This is to minimize further damage to permanent tee boxes which are suffering from excessive wear due to all our twisting and turning on the weaker grass over the cooler months where re-growth is negligible.

Weather permitting the third round of the Winter Eclectic will take place this coming Saturday and so far, 120 players have entered. Another date for your golfing diary is St Patrick’s Day on Wednesday 17 March. Castletown GC will be hosting a 4BBB ‘Shambles’ open event. The start sheet is not yet available for entry online, but golfers can register their interest by telephoning the pro-shop on 822211 or by dropping an email to andi@castletown.golf
